Webinar: Literacy= Language Production. Going Beyond the Text & Embracing the Talk.

This webinar was hosted by Kevin E. Baird.
The ideas discussed are presented here briefly.
As teachers, we are urged to provide clear and effective instructions so we would get back successful results from the students.
Second off, when we give instructions then we are giving input which is placed in the short memory. In order to move them to the working memory, we should activate it by letting students participate producing the language. They should talk, talk, and talk. and by that, we move it to the long memory with further practicing.
We can do so by using scaffolding; by letting them hear words we want them to learn and then they practice using them. We can also use deep understanding; we let the students read about a certain topic from various resources and through this they learn more words and are introduced to different aspects of language.
Third off, we want the students to be engaged in interactive talks and conversations with each other and be able to transfer what they learn in the classroom to outside the class. this helps in creating a connection with the other ideas they are exposed to.
We need to give them some time "Wait Time" when we provide them with the input in order to absorb what they heard. Wee can use the following exercise: Turn and talk, stop and jot, then share it with the class, say one more idea, re-voice what they did say. They should be engaged in discussions and extended talks so they practice the language well.
The ideas I loved the most, and they should be implemented in my classes, are of which allows the students to learn based on their interests. We can provide them with more than on text with different topics and they choose one of the topics presented so they would find the topic they have an interest in and have no excuse for not reading. Also, we should provide one day for collaboration, where we all discuss what they read about throughout the week, and they teach each other about the topics they read about and thus they learn better and faster.
I believe that there are no more excuses for the language being boring, we can learn anything we want in a fun and interactive way. We need the motivation to learn, and everything else is easy.
** Visual Aids were used, but I didn't snip any. I was fully focused :)

  1. Nice and interesting topic. we as teachers should use diversity in strategies, explanatory devices, changing tone, eye contact and others points in order to get students engaged in the lesson and to develop a deep understanding.

  3. nice beneficial information. for a teacher to be successful in her career she must use a variety of techniques and strategies, that motivate students, engage them in the lesson and encourage them to seek for knowledge by them self
